Pre-veterinary
Choosing a Major
- Pre-veterinary students must choose a major (pre-veterinary is not a major).
- Commonly chosen majors include biology, biochemistry, and chemistry.
- Any major is acceptable, so long as the student completes all pre-veterinary requirements.
- Consult the pre-professional health advisor – Francie Renschler.
Recommended Attributes of Veterinary School Applicants
- Competitive GPA of 3.0 or higher, especially in science courses
- Strong letters of recommendation from professors and one veterinarian
- Active in volunteer or work experience and leadership in extracurricular activities
- Show a variety of clinical experiences through shadowing, employment, or volunteering

Most veterinary schools will accept AP or Dual Credit. Check individual school's policy for science or prerequisite courses. The AP credit must appear on the college transcript.

- Take GRE in spring or summer before applying.
- Applications (completed through VMCAS system) accepted May through early September. This includes application, letters of recommendation, transcripts, and essays.
- Interviews conducted in January.

All pre-veterinary students must meet with an academic advisor in their major department in addition to meeting with the pre-professional health advisor during time of registration each semester!
